Does Sean or Steorn have any direct influence over this forum? What I'm trying to determine is whether or not this forum is likely to continue if Steorn shuts down their forum? And, is there any possibility of censorship?

A lot of the things I am posting now is simply to have a backup copy somewhere in case the Steorn resources vanish for some reason.

(Sorry if this reply seems rude, I'm in a bit of a rush and want to answer your questions completely.)

No, Steorn does not influence this forum directly or indirectly.

If the Steorn forum shuts down, we'll continue to operate -- why, it'll probably get very busy.

Censorship here is limited to extreme cases of abuse (such as pornography).

Er, read some of exco's posts and you'll see how 'liberal' this forum is. It is my belief that censorship here would only hinder our efforts. If people aren't free to express themselves fully, then open discussion is impossible.

Feel free to archive. I think we even have a section for that.

I thought Crank started and continued to assis maintaining this forum. If so, maybe she will discontinue it if she becomes angry at the contents. Certainly her pattern of ruthless repression of dissenting opinion over at the Steorn forum is not encouraging. I'd suggest keeping your own backups!

Not rude at all. Short and to the point.

After seeing a lot of abusive posts over at Steorn, I wasn't sure this was a reliable indicator.

Thanks, Mary.

It was when I learned of Crank's association with this forum that I decided to ask the question. Drichardson has answered it to my satisfaction. I feel a bit more secure now.

The stuff I am posting here may turn out not to have any real value. But it is near and dear to me, I'd hate to see it all vanish in a heartbeat. Steorn may claim that it's not even original. It's true, my ideas were inspired by clues that Sean handed out on the forum over there.

I am also making local copies of the threads at Steorn. But I have been putting some effort into filtering and organizing things over here. Hopefully, things over here will be a bit easier to reference than they are over at steorn.com.

Actually, I think we got it right the first time. It was Crank.

This forum started as a group project. Babcat, in my opinion, deserves the most credit. Crank owns the domain name, I host and support it, avid engineer designed the template and provides technical assistance, magnatrix, quanten, and others moderate.

With the SPDC handling the need this site filled, it's purpose seems to have changed. After the SPDC, we became 'that other place' where you go to ask if one of the other forums is 'down' -- now it seems we've become a haven for 'main forum' cast-offs. Smile

(Using us to report news and archive posts, I encourage very strongly.)

Our position as the only "major" non-Steorn Steorn forum is an important one that we can surely put to good use!
